This crunchy tasty dish holds a special meaning in Chinese culture leafy green vegies are believed to hold luck in their roots.

Ingredients

4 bunches gai lan (Chinese broccoli), ends trimmed

125ml (1/2 cup) hoisin sauce

2 tablespoons mushroom-flavoured dark soy sauce (see note)

2 teaspoons sesame oil

1 garlic clove, crushed

1 1/2 tablespoons sesame seeds, toasted

Step 1
Add enough water to a large saucepan or stockpot to come halfway up the side of the pan. Bring to the boil over medium-high heat. Add the gai lan. Cover and cook for 3 minutes or until bright green and tender crisp. Drain.

Step 2
Combine the hoisin sauce, soy sauce, sesame oil and garlic in a bowl.

Cut the gai lan into 5cm lengths and arrange on a serving platter. Spoon over the hoisin sauce mixture and sprinkle with the sesame seeds
